Van Buren

Posted by nyhoops

Martin Van-Buren H.S.  boys varsity basketball team was not looked upon favorably in the Queens II A division.  Benjamin Cardozo, Forest Hills, Thomas Edison and Beach Channel High School were the top teams honorably mentioned in the Queens II A division.  That might have all changed today.  The Fighting Vee-Bees of Martin Van-Buren high school beat a very tough Thomas Edison H.S. in overtime.  The Vee-Bees handed Edison a 14-12 first quarter lead that balloon to 37-24 at half-time.  Martin Van-Buren maintained a 51-37 3rd quarter score only to watch Edison storm all the way back to tie up the score 65-65 at the end of the 4th quarter.   Thomas Edison jumped ahead 73-71 midway through the overtime period as it began to look like the end of  the road for Van-Buren.  Senior forward Malcolm McGilvrey and senior guard Carl Benjamin stepped up the pressure forcing Edison to make some crucial turn overs down the stretch which enabled Van-Buren to secure the victory.  The final score in the contest was 87 MVB to 83 Edison.  The Fighting Vee-Bees were led by their seniors Malcolm McGilvrey 27 pts Orlando Johnson 18pts 15 rebounds Domonique Moorer 15 pts 8 asst  and Sampson Lawal 10 pts 6 block shots.  Martin Van Buren H.S. clinched 3rd place with this victory in the Queens II A division.
